The Spread Of Submission Fighting Techniques

During the 1940s, submission fighting techniques and practicesenjoyed something of a rebirth and spread across the globe.Indeed, a burgeoning number of men and women around the worldundertook to better understand and to more fully investigatesubmission fighting techniques.

Before more completely exploring the spread of submissionfighting since the 1940s, a general understanding of submissionfighting itself is necessary. Submission fighting is a term thatis used to describe various types of martial arts that focus ongrappling to effect the ultimate admission of loss (cryinguncle) or submission of an opponent. Some experts definesubmission fighting as being "unarmed close combat" that is usedto defeat or control an unarmed opponent within a sportingcontext.

Submission fighting involves the use of various joint locks,chokes and related manipulations to the opponent's body.According to submission fighting practitioners and experts, thebasic methods of attack utilized include striking, kicking,strangling and joint locking.

submissionfighting understand how to turn the basic offensive devices intodefensive maneuvers as is necessary. Examples of contemporaryforms of submission fighting include judo, jiu jitsu, shooto,and Brazilian jiu jitsu.

As mentioned previously, submission fighting experienced arebirth during the 1940s. The increase of interest in learningsubmission fighting techniques was the direct result of Japan'searly success during the beginning of World War II. Members ofthe Japanese armed forces, together with their counterparts inKorea, China and other Oriental nations and provinces, receivedtraining in submission fighting techniques as part of theiroverall service preparation. The Emperor's soldiers undertookintensive training directed towards mastering submissionfighting techniques.

Early on during the course of World War II, Allied citizens werenot interested in close-in combat of any sort. However, all ofthat changed on December 7, 1941, with the successful Japaneseattack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.Overnight, many citizens of the United States -- as well asother Allied nations -- became intensely interested in learningsubmission fighting techniques. Citizens enrolled in whatevertraining courses could be found, particularly along the westcoast of the United States. (At that time, the number ofqualified instructors was extremely limited.) These wartimeevents affected the foundation of submission fighting trainingprograms that remain in place in many nations the world oversixty years later in the 21st century.
